The non-profit organization DarkSky International, headquartered in Tucson, Arizona, USA, is committed to preserving and restoring intact nights through awareness, advocacy and conservation efforts. Since 1988, dozens of guidelines for responsible lighting have been issued, awareness of light pollution has been raised on all continents and more than 200 "Dark Sky Places" have been certified worldwide.

DarkSky Austria is committed to these goals throughout Austria. On October 18th 2023, the Tyrol Competence Center on Light Pollution and Dark Skies joined forces with committed people from the fields of astronomy, light planning, biology, political science and tourism throughout Austria. The newly constituted DarkSky Austria Board is committed to the preservation and restoration of the night.

→ The Kaunertal is working towards certification as the first Tyrol-wide "Dark Sky Place". After the Attersee-Traunsee Star Park, this would be the second region in Austria to be recognized by DarkSky.
