In many municipalities, obsolete lighting systems mean high electricity bills, rising maintenance costs and damage to nature and the environment. The Lighting Check-up was designed to promote energy-efficient and environmentally compatible lighting. A total of 40 Tyrolean municipalities were given information and counselling.
Five lighting engineers drew up an inventory of the street lighting and building illumination systems in use in the municipalities and assessed the potential for improvements in terms of energy consumption. Refurbishment of the lighting systems is expected to generate an average of 30 percent energy savings.
On average, 45 percent of the municipal electricity budget is spent on street lighting.
